How to Tell The Gender of South African Runners

With all the hoopla surrounding Caster Semenya, I figured now would be a great time to share the following. It’s not always the easiest thing to tell the sex (and I do mean gender here) of South African runners. Here are five ways to tell if a South African runner is male or female.

1. Look the runner in the eye and ask, “Do you tuck and tape?” Watch the eyes now – if they quickly look up or away, the runner is male.

2. Ask if they would like to go shopping with you… If you receive an affirmative response, the runner is female.

3. Stick your tongue in the runner’s ear. If you are male and are subsequently punched hard, the runner is also male. **

4. Ask if they like the movie “Steel Magnolias.” If they respond affirmatively, your runner is female. **

5. If you have attempted all of the above and are still uncertain as to the runner’s true gender, reach down and grab the runner’s crotch (try to be as subtle about it as possible). If you feel something oblong, it is most likely that you have a male South African runner.

Regardless of the whole androgyny, Caster Semenya’s, 800-meter time is quite impressive.

** SPECIAL NOTE – Many runners are gay – that’s why they wear the tight shorts. It becomes very difficult under these conditions to accurately discern gender. Proceed carefully. **
