Wasted Carbon

Baseball can be an ugly game at times…  Yesterday, when the Dodgers and the Brewers faced-off, baseball got ugly – again.  Check out Prince Fielder’s explosive reaction (post-game) after taking a fastball from Mota to the thigh.

To charge the Dodger’s locker room post-game is clearly a bit excessive – no?  Granted, I’d be pissed too…  It was clearly retaliation for the Manny Ramirez beaning earlier in the game.

I don’t believe many pitchers get a thrill out of throwing at a batter.  I can’t imagine that Mota was thrilled when he was given the go to throw at Fielder.  At least Mota was relatively decent about the offending pitch.  Of all the places to be beaned, the thigh is a pretty safe bet - no permanent injury will likely result.   It’s kinda’ like getting a charlie-horse or dead-leg punch in grade school…  I don’t think Fielder is running off to file a sports injury claim anytime soon.  He appeared to be fine, but clearly pissed off.  Had Mota thrown at his head, then I’d have a totally different view him.  That kind of a pitch could result in a severe, permanent injury (or worse).

Regardless, intentionally beaning anyone cheapens the game into a thug-fest.  It needs to be dealt with harshly by officials.  If nothing else, it’s a crappy example for the kids who idolize these players.
